Why you should coop this:
The game is quite original in its concept. Each level is an island with several obstacles and vehicles and your job is to complete 3 objectives on it. One is often to rescue other humans which will then follow you until you use an aircraft to fly away from the island and out of the level. You can rescue all humans at once or piecemeal. Other objectives might include clearing out an enemy or activating a generator. In coop the camera zooms out the farther you get away from each other which can result in the world being tiny and you and your coop buddy driving wacky vehicles on two different parts of the island. It can be great fun to just explore and make crazy shenanigans and you will also be able to complete some objectives this way. Other are typical switch puzzles like lowering a platform to get your partner to drive a vehicle on it to get it to higher ground where coordination and cooperation is needed. There are also some tricky enemy encounters where you have to drop explosive barrels so that enemies will be hit or scoop them up. The game is quite open and the fun you have will depend on who you are playing with, but the setup is quite unique and the challenges are motivating and fun. The controls are deliberately wacky at times and the style and atmosphere is very weird in a nice way – it has a very distinct look and the engine is able to do what game asks of it which is sometimes impressive due to the scale of things. We played this with huge gaps in between and always came back to it and each time needed a bit of time to get back into the groove but had a lot of fun and were communicating nicely among us. There are still some levels unplayed since the content is quite hefty. The best feature of this game are the many ideas on what challenges to do with the vehicles, switches and terrain.
Shortcomings:
The game has no real narrative and the challenges can be be quite daunting sometimes. Also the pacing is maybe a little off: you are working on jumping a bus from a to b for quite a while and once you manage and complete the level you are dropped on another island with completely different things to do. You need to get creative and work together so for people who like a little more handholding and independence of their coop partner this game might be to fiddly.
