Why you should coop this:

This was one of the earlier games on the Nintendo Switch and it was clearly inspired by the first Dungeon Defenders that we loved playing on XBox 360. Although we initially thought that the diabloesque standard demon visuals were off-putting and that the trailer looked like a game that would have to be well optimized for switch we bought it 4 times to play it.

We were certainly right to think that it was inspired by dungeon defenders (small, purposely designed levels with waves and the objective to protect the corecrystal) and the placement of the defenses and the strategy discussions that came with it were nice and good coop gameplay. You have your own money to build and upgrade but your team shares build points – the maximum number of defense units you can put on the map. Finding out what enemies will spawn and what towers prove best ist a fun, well-proven gameplay mechanic that is enhanced through coop play.

So the structure and the fundamental game design choices were sound if not at all original…however the game has significant shortcomings.

Shortcomings:

As suspected by watching the trailer the whole style of the game is bland and ugly. The story presentation adds to the drab and dire every demonic themed game ever feel. It was neither edgy, nor cool, nor original and an eyesore. Especially when compared to the colorful dungeon defenders.

Also the game is riddled with severe technical problems. The later levels get bigger and the demon hordes increase in numbers and at the same rate the Framerate decreases until it is barely playable but not at all enjoyable. The switch version needed way more work to be released.

However even with stable performance I imagine this game is better skipped. It is just neither original, nor pleasant to look at. All the things we found fun were directly taken from other better games. Since there is a new Dungeon Defenders Game on the Horizon that supposedly is similar to the original (and not the awful sequel) I think it is best to wait and see how this turns out before anyone plans to play this is coop with friends.

Cooperative or Multiplayer Game?

Many games that are listed as Coop are games were you rather play together with players playing simultaneously. The true cooperative element comes in with working together, coordination and good teamwork. Both types are viable and can be great fun. Our aim is to let you know how this game handles this.
