Why you should coop this:

This game was practically made for us. It mixes 4 player side-scrolling action with nice pixelated graphics, leveling up and a lot of puzzles. We really liked that all players have totally different characters and constantly unlock new weapons / actions. The coop mechanics are really nice: Reviving is on a percentage counter that counts up and remains at 99% where another player just has to swing by to get you up again. The downed player can give instructions to the alive ones to optimize the window on when it is best to revive. Also some enemies have shields in the colors of the players and only the right player can break that shield. Communicating that there is a shielded enemy and success on braking shields is crucial. The enemies are very varied and make fights very engaging. Additionally there are cool boss fights that spice things up. The game also has a puzzle component that is somewhat weirdly implemented. You can basically play through most of the game without paying attentions to the puzzles – you just find the odd secret stone-plate with poems written on. Once we engaged with these it was a surprisingly deep part of the game. From plain word puzzles, to subtle hints on what to do in the game to very weird environment stuff the game has a bonkers variation of puzzles. The puzzle part of the game is more or less optional. This is really one of the more creative brawler-esque games there are and deserves recognition and praise for its good ideas.

Shortcomings:

There are however also bad ideas or rather interesting ideas that are not implemented well. For example the very varied puzzle design is also a bit to the games detriment: some hints are so vague and not many rules apply on where to find the solution: it can be in a level, on the overworld map or hidden completely differently in the game – or worse. Once you find the solution you can feel on the hand quite smart and on the other hand you can see how you could easily get stuck on this forever – think some FEZ solutions. We had one player in our group who had no problem looking solutions up and others who really wanted to riddle. This lead to some solutions being only found with subtle, better informed hints from one person that very parentally nudged the others to the solution. Not ideal at all but maybe one way that we did not became incredibly frustrated with the puzzle design.
Also due to the rather optional nature of the puzzle part and the fact that we only realized how intricate these are the game was action heavy in the first half and very puzzle heavy in the second half which caused in total quite the huge pacing issue. These complaints are rather prominent but nevertheless the good easily outweighs the bad with this game.

Cooperative or Multiplayer Game?

Many games that are listed as Coop are games were you rather play together with players playing simultaneously. The true cooperative element comes in with working together, coordination and good teamwork. Both types are viable and can be great fun. Our aim is to let you know how this game handles this. More on this distinction under “About this Site”.

Cooperation

If the graph is more orange colored the game falls more in the Cooperation category.

Multiplayer

If the graph is more blue colored the game falls more in the Multiplayer category.

Awards:

Puzzle Award

This came not across as a puzzle game but has a rather thick puzzle layer coating that is special and original – and optional since it is very difficult bordering on frustration. Very applaudable effort to mix puzzle into the brawler genre.
