Why you should coop this:

Crawl is a totally unique and stylish game that has a very good core idea and garnishes it with several other good ideas and creates a very fun loop and manages to condense this in a roughly 60-90min round that is perfect to be added to every couch coop session to spice things up and loosen the group up between full-on cooperative games. The good thing is that all parts of this game are quite fun: playing as the hero and feeling hunted is fun since you have enough things at your disposal to fight back. Also being one of the demons and profiting from your coop players distracting the hero for you to deal a powerful attack feels great. Both hero and demons have a fun upgrade loop. The game is designed in a way that the hero will win in the end and the question is who will be playing him in the end, but still it does not feel like a loss for the other players. The whole design as a coop but not so coop game is ingenious and since it does not try to be a 20+ hour game but more of a fun romp for an hour it quickly became an evergreen for us that repeatedly comes out for 1 session.

Shortcomings:

It needs one or even two rounds for a player to completely wrap your mind around it so it might be a bit off putting at first for new players but it is easy to pick up and even win as a newbie. It is also more or less endless and more like a board game that you can play one round after another.

Cooperative or Multiplayer Game?

Many games that are listed as Coop are games were you rather play together with players playing simultaneously. The true cooperative element comes in with working together, coordination and good teamwork. Both types are viable and can be great fun. Our aim is to let you know how this game handles this. More on this distinction under “About this Site”.

Awards:

Creativity Award

It is a super inventive mixup of coop and competetive with changing allegiances on the fly. Your goals are constantly changing and even as part of the 3 player coop group you have your own agenda to deal the killing blow and amass XP to level up. One session is quite short and therefore it fits in most coop evenings between longer games.

Style Award

From its pixelated graphics to its soundtrack to the bonkers trailer this game has a very great personality that fits its anarcho mindset and simply oozes of a certain metal/satanic style that was well captured in pixels.
